Stop Doing So Much to Your Vagina: An OB-GYN’s Honest (and Needed) Talk

February 16, 2026

After years of working as an OB-GYN, one pattern shows up again and again in exam rooms:
Women are doing too much to their vaginas, and feeling frustrated, confused, or even embarrassed when things don’t feel right.

So many patients come in convinced they’re doing something wrong because they don’t smell “fresh enough,” they’re dealing with irritation, or they keep getting infections despite trying every product on the shelf. And almost every time, the issue isn’t poor hygiene, it’s over-hygiene.

From scented washes to douching, steaming, antibacterial soaps, and layers of tight underwear, women have been taught that their bodies need constant fixing. As an OB-GYN, here’s the truth that doesn’t get advertised enough: most of these habits disrupt your vaginal health instead of supporting it.

Your vagina is not dirty. It’s not broken. And it doesn’t need to be scrubbed, perfumed, or detoxed to be healthy. In fact, the more we interfere with its natural systems, the more likely we are to throw things off, leading to yeast infections, BV, irritation, dryness, and discomfort.

Vaginal Care Myth #1: “You need feminine washes to smell fresh.”

This idea has been heavily marketed to women, and it causes a lot of unnecessary anxiety.

Your vagina is self-cleaning. It naturally maintains a slightly acidic pH that helps keep harmful bacteria in check. When you use scented soaps, washes, or wipes labeled as “feminine hygiene,” you can throw that delicate balance off.

Once the pH is disrupted, symptoms such as irritation, itching, unusual discharge, odor, yeast infections, or bacterial vaginosis can appear. Ironically, many women then use more products to fix the problem, creating a cycle that’s hard to break.

What actually works:
Warm water and a gentle, unscented soap are used only on the vulva (the external area). Nothing needs to be washed internally. Your vagina already has that covered.

A mild, natural scent is normal. Strong or unusual odors are not a cleanliness issue. They’re a health signal worth checking out.

Myth #2: “Vaginal steaming detoxes your body.”

Vaginal steaming has gained popularity as a “natural detox,” but medically speaking, it’s not doing what it promises.

The vaginal tissue is extremely delicate. Steam can cause burns, irritation, and inflammation, even if it doesn’t feel painful right away. On top of that, steaming can disrupt the healthy bacteria your vagina relies on to protect itself.

Your body already has a detox system in place. The vagina and uterus naturally clear themselves through normal discharge and your menstrual cycle. No extra detox methods are needed.

Instead of supporting healing, steaming often creates more problems, especially for women already dealing with infections, dryness, or hormonal changes.

Vaginal Care Myth #3: “You should always sleep in underwear.”

This vaginal care myth is surprisingly common and rarely talked about.

Wearing tight underwear, especially synthetic fabrics, traps heat and moisture. That warm, damp environment makes it easier for yeast and bacteria to grow, increasing the risk of infections and irritation.

Your skin needs airflow, especially overnight when your body is already working to regulate hormones and repair tissue.

A healthier option:
Sleeping without underwear or choosing loose, breathable cotton styles. Small changes like this can make a big difference for women who deal with recurring yeast infections or irritation.

Myth #4: “Douching keeps you clean.”

Douching is one of the most harmful habits when it comes to vaginal health.

It doesn’t remove “dirt” or odor; instead, it flushes out the healthy bacteria that protect you from infections. Once those bacteria are gone, harmful microbes can take over, leading to bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and chronic imbalance.

Many women start douching because of odor, but douching often creates the very problem it’s trying to solve.

If you notice a strong, fishy, or unusual smell, that’s not a sign to clean harder; it’s a sign to check in with a healthcare provider.

Myth #5: “Antibacterial soaps are best.”

Antibacterial sounds like a good thing… until it isn’t.

These soaps don’t just kill bad bacteria; they wipe out the good bacteria too. For the vaginal area, that protective microbiome is essential for maintaining balance and preventing infection.

Using harsh cleansers can lead to dryness, irritation, microtears, and increased susceptibility to infections.

What your body actually needs:
A mild, unscented cleanser, used sparingly, and only externally. Simple really is better here.

The Big Picture: Your Vagina Needs Balance, Not Control

Your vagina doesn’t need to be perfumed, detoxed, steamed, or scrubbed. It needs balance, gentleness, and trust.

When vaginal health issues show up, it’s often because that balance has been disrupted, sometimes by stress, hormones, medications, or well-meaning habits that do more harm than good.

If you’ve been dealing with recurring irritation, infections, or discomfort, the solution may not be adding another product. It may be stepping back and letting your body do what it’s designed to do.

Sometimes the healthiest choice is simply doing less.
