Let’s Talk About an Overactive Thyroid
November 26, 2025
Ladies, how many times have you brushed off feeling tired, anxious, or “just not yourself” as stress or part of getting older? I hear it all the time in the exam room. But let me tell you, sometimes it’s not just stress, and it’s not “all in your head.” It could be your thyroid.
That little butterfly-shaped gland in your neck? It’s small, but sis, it runs the show. When it starts working too hard, a condition we call hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid gland can occur. Your whole body feels it. From your energy levels to your heart rate, your metabolism to your mood, an overactive thyroid can throw everything out of balance. And because it’s more common in women (especially between the ages of 30 and 50), it’s something we need to discuss openly.
What Does It Mean to Have an Overactive Thyroid?
Your thyroid produces hormones that regulate how your body utilizes energy. Think of it like the gas pedal in your car. With hyperthyroidism, that pedal gets stuck, your thyroid pumps out too much hormone, and suddenly your body is running in overdrive.
Sometimes this is caused by an autoimmune condition like Graves’ disease, sometimes by growths called nodules, and sometimes by medication. Whatever the cause, the result is the same: your body is moving faster than it should, and it starts to show up in ways you can feel.
Signs and Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore
Sis, this is where I need you to pay attention. The symptoms of hyperthyroidism can feel like a lot of other things, such as anxiety, perimenopause, or just a rough season in life. But when you notice more than one of these at the same time, it’s worth bringing up to your doctor:
- Unexplained weight loss (even if you’re eating normally)
- A racing or irregular heartbeat
- Feeling anxious, restless, or on edge
- Struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep
- Sweating more than usual or feeling hot all the time
- Muscle weakness or shaky hands
- Irregular or lighter menstrual cycles
- Constant fatigue even when you’ve rested
Don’t write these off as “normal.” Your body is speaking. Listen to it.
How Do You Find Out If It’s Your Thyroid?
It’s pretty simple to test. One quick blood test checks your thyroid hormone levels (T3 and T4) and TSH (the hormone from your brain that tells your thyroid when to work). If your thyroid is in overdrive, the numbers will show it.
Sometimes your doctor may want to look a little deeper with an ultrasound or scan, but that initial blood work gives us the answers we need.
Treatment Options
Now here’s the part I want you to know: hyperthyroidism is very treatable. Depending on what’s causing it, you and your doctor may talk about:
- Medication to slow down thyroid hormone production (and sometimes beta-blockers to ease the racing heart).
- Radioactive iodine therapy is used to shrink the thyroid over time.
- Surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid if other treatments don’t work.
The best plan depends on your unique situation, but what matters is that you do have options.
Why It Especially Matters for Us, Ladies
For women, thyroid health isn’t just about weight and energy. An overactive thyroid can affect fertility, pregnancy, heart health, and even bone strength. If left untreated, it can have long-term effects, which is why catching it early is so important. Too many of us put ourselves last, checking on everyone else but ignoring our own health. Sis, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
What You Can Do for Yourself Right Now
While medical treatment is often necessary, you can support your thyroid and overall health by adopting certain lifestyle habits. Eat a balanced diet rich in whole foods, manage stress (which includes setting boundaries and protecting your peace), and prioritize quality sleep. Also, be cautious about supplements; too much iodine can actually make hyperthyroidism worse.
An overactive thyroid might be small, but it’s mighty, and when it’s off, your whole body feels it. The good news is that with the proper care, you can regain your balance. So, if you’ve been struggling with unexplained weight changes, a racing heart, or anxiety that doesn’t add up, don’t just chalk it up to stress. Talk to your doctor. Advocate for yourself.
Because at the end of the day, sis, your health is worth it.
