Is It Safe to Eat Sushi While Breastfeeding? And Other FAQs About Breastfeeding

August 13 2025

Breastfeeding is a beautiful journey, but it often comes with a ton of questions. I know from experience that even as an OB-GYN, I had my questions and sometimes even found my way to Google during a late-night feeding session. Sometimes, I felt completely overwhelmed by all the information that came up. I can’t eat this, but I can eat that. I can’t take this medication, but I can take this one. It seemed like never-ending pages of cans and can’t, and with those search results came even more questions. So, why not answer some of the most frequently asked breastfeeding questions?

Quick Breastfeeding Information

Before jumping into all your questions, let’s do a quick refresher on breastfeeding basics. Breastfeeding gives your baby all the essential nutrients and antibodies they need to grow strong and healthy. It also helps Mama and Baby bond. Plus, it can be super convenient. No bottles to clean or formula to mix. However, breastfeeding can bring up some questions about what’s okay for you and your baby, so let’s take some time and give you some information!

Top 10 FAQs About Breastfeeding

The questions below are some of the most Googled breastfeeding questions. I hope I can answer yours.

When Does Breastfeeding Stop Hurting?

The early days of breastfeeding can be painful as your body adjusts and your baby learns how to latch properly. Typically, any discomfort should lessen after the first few weeks. If you’re still experiencing pain beyond that, it might be a good idea to consult a lactation consultant to ensure everything is going smoothly and discuss with the baby’s pediatrician to rule out tongue or lip ties.

Is It Normal to Have a Period While Breastfeeding, or Is It Normal Not to Have a Period While Breastfeeding?

Yes, it’s normal! Some women get their period back while breastfeeding, while others may not have one for months. Your body is adjusting to the new normal, which can vary widely. If you are exclusively breastfeeding, you may not menstruate, which is common for the first 6 months.  Once exclusivity ends, you may begin ovulating and may get periods.

Is It Safe to Eat Sushi While Breastfeeding?

Sushi is a hot topic! The general advice doctors give is to avoid raw fish to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses, which could potentially affect both you and your baby. If you’re craving sushi, cooked varieties like eel or tempura rolls are good options. But remember, when picking up the takeout menu or going out to dinner, always make sure your sushi comes from a reputable place to keep things safe and tasty.

Can You Get Laser Hair Removal While Breastfeeding?

Most recommend waiting until you’re done breastfeeding for laser hair removal. There’s limited research on the topic, so it’s generally better to err on the side of caution.

Can I Get Lip Fillers While Breastfeeding?

It’s best to hold off on cosmetic procedures like lip fillers while breastfeeding. The safety of these treatments during breastfeeding hasn’t been well-studied, so sticking with more natural beauty routines might be a safer bet.

Can I Take Hair, Skin, and Nails Vitamins While Breastfeeding?

Yes, you can! Just make sure the vitamins are specifically formulated for breastfeeding mothers and check with your healthcare provider to ensure they’re safe and won’t interfere with your baby’s needs. Do not take in addition to prenatal or multivitamins unless cleared by your doctor. You don’t want to overdose on vitamins.

What Allergy Medicine Is Safe While Breastfeeding?

For allergy relief, some medications are considered safe during breastfeeding. Typically, antihistamines like loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec) are recommended. In general, avoid formulas with codeine, like Claritin-D and Zyrtec-D. Always check with your doctor before starting any new medication to ensure it’s appropriate for you and your baby.

Can You Drink Herbal Tea While Breastfeeding?

Herbal tea can be a great way to stay hydrated and relaxed, but not all teas are created equal. Black tea and peppermint tea are generally considered safe. Hibiscus tea, however, might not be recommended in large quantities.

Can You Eat Chocolate When Breastfeeding?

Good news for chocoholics! Yes, sis, you can eat chocolate while breastfeeding. Just pay attention to your baby’s reaction to caffeine since chocolate does contain small amounts. If you notice any fussiness or sleep disturbances, you might want to cut back on your chocolate intake.

Can I Have a Glass of Wine While Breastfeeding?

Moderation is key here. It’s generally okay to have a glass of wine occasionally. Or really, any alcoholic beverage (one).  Acog says:  Up to one standard drink per day is considered acceptable. To minimize infant exposure, it’s recommended to wait at least 2 hours per drink before breastfeeding. No need to “pump and dump.” But, it may be best to wait at least 2-3 hours before breastfeeding to allow the alcohol to clear from your system. Always err on the side of caution, and consider pumping and storing milk in advance if you plan to enjoy a drink.

What Can I Take for Constipation While Breastfeeding?

Constipation can be a common issue during breastfeeding. Increase your fiber intake with fruits, green vegetables (best to have 2-3 servings per day), and whole grains, drink plenty of water, and try over-the-counter options like stool softeners like Colace.

Navigating breastfeeding can be a rollercoaster, but with the right information, you can make the best choices for you and your little one. If you have any more questions or need a bit of reassurance, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor and look for guidance from a lactation consultant.
