Is Having Sex Everyday Bad When Trying To Conceive?

October 19, 2026

By month four, the calendar is running your bedroom. There are ovulation strips on the bathroom counter, a color-coded app on your phone, and a quiet question the two of you have both been carrying. If we do this every single day, are we actually hurting our chances?

I hear that worry in my office all the time, sis, and I want to lift it off you. Daily sex will not hurt your odds, but more sex does not necessarily raise them either, and I will show you what the research says about timing so trying feels like a plan again and not a performance.

Quick answer: No. Having sex every day or every other day during your fertile window is fine, and there is no need to hold back. More sex does not necessarily mean better odds, though. Your fertile window is 5 to 6 days, including the day of ovulation, so timing matters more than counting how many times you try.

I'm a board-certified OB/GYN, and in this video I explain how sperm and ovulation work together and how often to have sex when you are trying to get pregnant.

Is Daily Sex Bad for Your Chances of Getting Pregnant?

Short answer, no. The worry usually comes from a sensible idea, that more sex must mean less sperm each time. Here is what holds up and what does not.

Daily Sex Does Not Lower Your Odds

Yes, you can have sex every day when you are trying to conceive, and there is no need to hold back. Having sex every day or every other day during your fertile window is fine. Just know that having sex every day is not going to necessarily increase your chances. It is not a case of more sex equals higher odds.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine says sex every day and sex every other day give similar results during the fertile window. It also says couples should not be told to limit how often they have sex when trying for pregnancy. Some guidelines suggest every two to three days, so if daily feels like too much, that is a perfectly good rhythm too.

Your Body Keeps Making Sperm Every Day

A man makes new sperm all the time, on the order of a thousand every second, so having sex often will not make him run out. A healthy ejaculate holds tens of millions of sperm, and it only takes one to meet the egg. Back-to-back tries can carry a bit less each time, which is where spacing comes in.

On a semen analysis, doctors look for at least 16 million sperm per milliliter, which is about 39 million in the whole sample. That is the lower limit the World Health Organization uses, not a target to hit every time.

Do You Need to Wait Between Tries to Save Up Sperm?

You may have heard that you should skip a few days so your partner can build the count back up. There is something to that, as long as the breaks stay short.

Spacing Sex Out Can Help Sperm Supply

Spacing sex out over a few days can be helpful for your partner’s sperm supply, and having sex every day is still fine if that is what feels right for you. What you want to avoid is a very long break, because going longer than about 5 days between ejaculations can lower sperm counts.

A 2024 review of 13 randomized trials found that longer breaks gave a slightly higher sperm concentration, but also more damage to the sperm’s DNA. The evidence is still mixed, so think of a few days apart as helpful, not as a rule, and try not to go longer than about 5 days.

When a Lower Count Changes the Advice

If your partner’s semen analysis shows a lower count, ask their doctor what spacing makes sense for you. This is one place where an individual result beats a general rule.

Why Your Fertile Window Matters More Than Counting Days

If frequency is not the problem, timing is where your effort actually pays off. That is where the calendar earns its place.

Your Fertile Window Is 5 to 6 Days, Including Ovulation Day

Your fertile window is 5 to 6 days, including the day of ovulation. That means sex in the days before ovulation counts, not just sex on ovulation day, which is why sex every day or every other day through that window works well.

In a classic study that tracked 221 women, pregnancy happened only when sex fell in the days just before ovulation or on ovulation day, and the earliest days carried the lowest chance. For a closer look at the egg’s side of the timing, read how many days after ovulation you can still get pregnant.

What If You Do Not Know When You Ovulate?

If your periods are irregular, your window moves around, and guessing gets hard. Start with how to track ovulation with irregular periods and learn how long after an LH surge you ovulate.

If you suspect you are not ovulating at all, this guide to getting pregnant without ovulating explains what is possible.

Positions and Lying Down Afterward

People often ask me about positions and whether to stay in bed afterward. Neither one changes your odds, and I cover it in my article on whether to pee after sex when trying to conceive.

When to Get Help and What to Change Together

Trying to conceive is a 50/50 journey between two people, and you are not necessarily the problem. These are the steps I give my patients.

How Long to Try Before Seeing a Provider

If you are under 35, see a provider after 12 months of trying without success. If you are 35 or older, go after about 6 months. Ask your partner to get checked at the same time, because the cause can be on either side.

If you have irregular periods or a known condition that affects fertility, do not wait that long. Irregular or absent periods are a reason to be seen sooner.

Habits That Matter for Both of You

For both of you, the habits most clearly linked to lower fertility are smoking, recreational drugs, heavy alcohol and heavy caffeine, so this is a good time to cut back or stop. If you take supplements, tell your provider what you are taking.
