WOMEN'S HEALTH

Confused about supplements for women? A simple guide for women on what to take, why it matters, and how to support energy, hormones, and gut health.

Are Your Supplements For Women Doing More Harm Than Good?

December 2, 2025

Ladies, what’s with all the supplements for women? Every week, I have patients coming into my office with a purse full of bottles, ashwagandha, maca root, sea moss, magnesium, vitamin D, iron, probiotics… You name it, somebody on TikTok swore it changed their life. And listen, I get it. We all want to feel better, balance our hormones, get our energy back, and glow from the inside out. But sis, before you pop another capsule, let’s make sure those supplements are actually helping and not quietly doing more harm than good.

The Truth About Supplements (and Why You Might Need Them)

Here’s the deal: supplements can absolutely support your health when used the right way. Iron can prevent anemia, magnesium can help with cramps and sleep, and vitamin D can boost your mood and immune system. For Black women especially, vitamin D deficiency and iron deficiency are super common, so yes, sometimes we really do need that extra support.

But “more” doesn’t always mean “better.” Taking too much of a supplement (even a “natural” one) can throw your hormones out of whack, mess with your digestion, or even affect how your prescription meds work. So before you add a new supplement to your lineup, it’s worth asking a few key questions.

Questions to Ask Before Taking Any Supplements for Women

Why am I taking this?
Are you addressing an actual deficiency, or just following a TikTok trend? (Be honest, sis.)

Did I get tested first?
Bloodwork can tell you what your body truly needs—guessing can lead to imbalance or overdose.

Is it safe with my medications or birth control?
Herbal supplements like St. John’s Wort or Vitex can interfere with how birth control or antidepressants work.

What’s the dose and quality?
Not all supplements are created equal. Look for third-party tested brands and avoid mystery blends that don’t list amounts.

Common Supplement Mistakes I See in My Practice

Now, what not to do, because even with the best intentions, I see too many women making the same mistakes over and over again. You might be thinking you’re helping your body, but these habits can actually backfire:

  • Taking iron without confirming a deficiency: Too much iron can actually damage your organs. Get tested first.
  • Doubling up on similar ingredients: You might be taking multiple supplements that all contain zinc, magnesium, or B vitamins without realizing it.
  • Skipping meals because “I’m taking my vitamins”: Supplements don’t replace balanced meals. Food should always come first.
  • Ignoring side effects: If you suddenly feel nauseous, bloated, or dizzy after starting something new, your body is telling you something.

When to See a Professional

If your energy is low, your cycles are irregular, or your mood feels off, don’t just self-diagnose and grab whatever supplements for women are trending. Schedule a checkup and get your hormone levels, thyroid, and vitamin panels tested. That’s how you create a targeted plan instead of wasting money (and risking your health) on random products.

And sis, please, bring your supplements to your appointment. Seriously. Line them up in a baggie if you have to. I want to see what you’re taking so we can figure out what’s helping and what’s not.
